Media outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and TV Guide reported that the ensemble-driven indie feature will star Shannen Doherty and Dylan McDermott as well as Zoe Saldana, Lake Bell, Nick Stahl, Paz Vega, Adriana Barraza, Colleen Camp, Jamie Chung, Robert Hoffman, Peter Macdissi, Emily Meade, Anson Mount, Rosamund Pike, Austin Williams, Chandler George Brown and Tom Wright.

Palms was scripted by Christopher B. Landon, who also wrote the 2007 thriller Disturbia. Palms will also mark Landon's directorial debut.

The film is currently in production with principal photography taking place in Los Angeles, California. It will also move on to shoot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Oren Segal, Steven Prince and Jason Hewitt are reported to be producing the film, and Tyler Thompson, Vince Morella and Naz Jafri will contribute as executive producers.

To date, the critical reception for the film has been largely negative. One critic described the film as being “one of the most offensive movies I’ve seen in the past decade”, going on to say:

If there’s a legitimate point to this film, then I missed it. I was distracted by how “in your face” the story was at all times, all but begging us to be offended by its crassness and politically incorrect content. Watching this film is a miserable experience, and almost all of the characters are despicable. Even the ones we’re supposed to care about are incredibly annoying –

Andrew Schenker of Slant magazine gave the film just half of one star out of a possible four. Writing of the film:

Landon's deeply cynical method is to conjure up the most aberrant corners of humanity and then wallow around in his self-created muck looking to scavenge what little scraps of humor he can find.

Gabe Callahan, of, pointed out his theories as to why the film was such a disappointment:

Burning Palms has a lack of focus climatically as each story limps to their anti-climatic reveals. For Landon’s directorial debut, Burning Palms is a movie that threatens to leave no taboo unexplored but the film seemed scared and hesitant of its own subject matter, and never takes the plunge into the deep end of dark and satirical film-making In this way the movie fails. The shocking parts are predictable, the funny parts fall flat, and the satire is non-existent. That is the core of the problem with Burning Palms: there is a fine line between satire and stereotypes. The film doesn’t seem aware of this line as it tries its hardest to make a point about stereotypes and taboos. It fails miserably at making this point and just ends up being misogynistic and naïve. I would have loved to have been shocked and disturbed. Instead I had to settle for disappointed.

The film currently only holds a 33% metacritic rating, and a 17% Rotten score on

Watch Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune Full Movie Online Free

Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune will be released on 5th of January 2011 wide in any theaters. Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune (2011) is a Documentary, Biography & History Film directed and written by Kenneth Bowser. The cast of the film are Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Christopher Hitchens and Phil Ochs. The movie Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune is under the distribution of First Run Features and MPAA rating as NR. “There’s no place in this world where I’ll belong, when I’m gone, And I won’t know the right from the wrong, when I’m gone, And you won’t find me singin’ on this song, when I’m gone. So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here”

As our country continues to embroil itself in foreign wars and once again pins its hopes on a new leader’s promise for change, the feature length documentary, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune is a timely tribute to an unlikely American hero. Phil Ochs, a folk singing legend, who many called “the emotional heart of his generation,” loved his country and he pursued its honor, in song and action, with a ferocity that had no regard for consequences. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and a quiver of razor sharp songs, he tirelessly fought the “good fight” for peace and justice throughout his short life.

Phil Ochs rose to fame in the early 1960’s during the height of the folk and protest song movement. His songs, with lyrics ripped straight from the daily news, spoke to those emboldened by the hopeful idealism of the day. Ochs himself believed to his core that he and his music could change the world for the better. From protesting the Vietnam War to supporting striking miners, from his attacks on sitting Presidents to mocking the politically disinterested, he struck at the heart of both the Right and Left wing political establishment with precisely targeted musical satire and righteous indignation.

As prolific as he was passionate, Ochs released seven acclaimed albums and wrote hundreds of songs in his career. His songs became anthems for the anti-war movement and still beautifully reflect the pain and the possibilities of those turbulent times. “Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune” is buoyed by these anthems and melodies – from humorous to haunting – and throughout the film play the role of narrator, giving contextual depth to the unfolding saga of Ochs’ complex political and personal life.

Possessed by the American fantasy and dream he saw projected on the Hollywood screen, Phil Ochs fought for the bright lights of fame and for social justice in equal measure. In the end it was this defining contradiction that would eventually tear him apart. While he never gained the widespread attention he so desperately wanted, his solo shows and his radical politics would generate the kind of controversy that only a true star could attract.

By 1968, the mood of the country had changed. With the death of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy and the events of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, all that seemed possible just a few years earlier began to fade and Phil Ochs took this hopelessness to heart as if the failings of the movement were his own. His mental and physical health declined as he sank deep into depression and alcoholism. He took his own life in 1976 at the age of 35.

By the time of his death the FBI had a dossier on him that was over 400 pages long. They would argue that he had no respect for government policies and stood against his country in a time of war. Weaving together photos, film clips, historic live performances and interviews with an array of people influenced by Ochs; from Sean Penn to Pete Seeger, Joan Baez to Tom Hayden, “Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune” paints a very different picture. We are able to understand that Ochs’ lasting legacy in both music and politics ultimately mirrored the complexities and contradictions of the country he loved -- and his life, sadly, reflects the arc of the times in which he lived.

“Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune” reveals the biography of a conflicted truth seeking troubadour who, with a guitar in hand, stood up for what he believed in and challenged us all to do the same. Unyielding in his political principals and unbending in his artistic vision, Phil Ochs, though branded a traitor by his critics, was above all a fiercely patriotic American. This is his story. Watch free Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune (2011) movie stream online.

The film is both a biography of Ochs and a history of left-wing political activism during the 1960s. Tracking Ochs' rise to fame during the folk and protest song movements of the period, the film depicts his growing involvement in the radical politics that developed over the decade. Throughout, he wrote hundreds of songs, many of them ripped straight from the daily news. As the film's interviews bring out, Ochs firmly believed his music could change the world for the better.

Besides the archival footage of Ochs and the interviews with others involved in the folk movement, the film features extensive news clips of the events of the times, including the Civil Rights struggle in the South, assassination of President John F. Kennedy, rallies protesting US military involvement in Vietnam, assassinations of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, shootings of students at Kent State, and the "police riot" at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Ochs became a part of the inner circle that sought to defeat US policies, and the film shows interviews with some of the movement's central figures, several of whom were close friends with Ochs, including Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, co-founders of the Youth International Party, and Tom Hayden, who went on to become a California State Senator.

As the film recounts, Ochs first became interested in politics and folk music while attending college at Ohio State University. He eventually dropped out of school and moved to Greenwich Village in 1962. His goal was to become the folk movement's leading songwriter. Unfortunately, Bob Dylan was already on his way to claiming that title, and Ochs had to settle for second best, at least in that regard. One of the film's subjects is the contrast between the two. Dylan, less concerned with politics than his music, abandoned topical songs early on. Ochs, on the other hand, held by his commitment to the era's causes, which made him, in Kenneth Bowser's view, probably the most important protest singer of the 1960s.

According to interviews with those close to Ochs, the political struggles weighed heavily on the folk singer, who took much of it personally. After the events in Chicago, he felt that America had lost its way. Suffering from bipolar disorder, Ochs subsequently became depressed and slid into alcoholism. He committed suicide at his sister's apartment in 1976.

The film features parts of about three dozen songs that Ochs had written over the span of his career, from "Draft Dodger Rag" and "I Ain't Marching Anymore" to "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" and "One Way Ticket Home". It also includes a cover of his song "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" by Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon. Songs by other artists include Dave Van Ronk's recording of the traditional "He Was a Friend of Mine", Bob Dylan's recording of his song "Blowin' in the Wind", and Chilean activist and singer-songwriter Víctor Jara's recording of his song "El Cigarrito".

This film took 3 and half years to make, since the beginning of the writing process. It was shot between Oct. 2008 and Feb. 2009 in Barcelona, Spain. It was a Mexican and Spanish co-production.

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reports 66% of critics (Top critics rated 80%) featured on the site gave a positive review of the film at an average rating of 6.3 out of 10. Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter calls the film, “ a gorgeous melancholy tone poem about love, fatherhood and guilt and Bardem’s performance as "...a knockout." Betsy Sharkey of the LA Times wrote, “Bardem gives a performance of staggering depth, unquestionably one of the year’s best.” A.O. Scott from the New York Times writes, “ Mr. Iñárritu creates a feeling of raw, sprawling intimacy…every shot is full of emotional and social detail.” Roger Ebert wrote "What drew me into the film and engaged my sympathy was the presence of Bardem...a vastly human actor." Steve Pond of The Wrap writes Bardem’s performance is a “towering achievement”. The film has been overwhelmingly well-received abroad, particularly in France and the UK. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian writes, “The fluency and confidence of Inarritu's cinematic language are really spectacular. Watch Another Year Full Movie Online Free

Another Year is a Drama and Comedy film set to be released this December 29, 2010 in theaters wide. The story in the movie Another Year (2010), in the Spring, happily married Gerri, a medical counselor, and Tom, a geologist, tend their allotment. They entertain Gerri’s lonely work colleague Mary, who gets very drunk, and bemoans her disastrous love life. Gerri and Tom enjoy a warm relationship with their community lawyer son Joe, aged 30, who reports that although his friends are getting married, he is still without a partner.

In the Summer, Ken comes down to London to spend a weekend with Gerri and Tom. Ken works in a government employment office in Hull, and is Tom’s boyhood friend from their native Derby. He gets very drunk, and bemoans his tragic, lonely life. The next day, while Gerri celebrates the sunshine at the allotment, Tom, Ken, Joe and a neighbor enjoy a game of golf. A barbeque party follows. Mary arrives late and flustered in her newly-acquired second-hand car. She is frosty towards an innocently amorous Ken, and flirtatious in an urgent and serious way towards Joe, her junior by a generation.

In the Autumn, Gerri and Tom return home from the allotment to enjoy a pleasant surprise from Joe. He has hidden his new partner Katie behind a door. Katie is an occupational therapist, and Gerri and Tom like her immediately. But Mary, who has already been invited to tea, is instantly jealous and hostile towards Katie, and behaves very rudely. Although they all sympathize with her car troubles, Mary’s behavior towards Katie leaves a bad odor with the good-natured Gerri and Tom.

In the Winter, Gerri, Tom and Joe drive up to Derby for the funeral of the wife of Tom’s elder brother, Ronnie. Ronnie’s aggressive, estranged son Carl arrives late at the crematorium. Back at Ronnie’s house, Carl is confrontational with his father, and with Tom and Joe; he causes other mourners to leave suddenly, and then stomps off in a rage. Gerri and Tom bring Ronnie back to London. Whilst they are at the allotment, Mary shows up at the house unannounced, and in a fraught state. She drinks tea and smokes cigarettes with a bemused Ronnie. On their return, Gerri and Tom are far from pleased to see Mary, especially as Joe is due to arrive with Katie for a family dinner. But after Mary has broken down apologetically, Gerri invites her to stay, albeit reluctantly. At the dinner table, while Gerri and Tom reminisce about the round-the-world back-packing days of their youth, and Katie and Joe look forward to their impending trip to Paris, Ronnie quietly enjoys his beer and his dinner and Mary faces the sad emptiness of her passing life. The film is directed and written by Mike Leigh, under the distribution of Sony Pictures Classics, MPAA rating as PG-13. Another Year cast are Lesley Manville as Mary, Jim Broadbent as Tom Hepple, Ruth Sheen as Gerri Hepple, Peter Wight as Ken, Oliver Maltman as Joe Hepple, David Bradley as Ronnie Hepple, Karina Fernandez as Katie, Martin Savage as Carl Hepple, Michele Austin as Tanya, Philip Davis as Jack, Stuart McQuarrie as Tom's colleague and Imelda Staunton as Janet. Because of the death in 2009 of the director's usual producer Simon Channing-Williams, Another Year was produced by Georgina Lowe, who had worked regularly on Mike Leigh films since Naked (1993). Thin Man Films led the production together with television channel Film4 and Focus Features International. The project received £1.2 million from the UK Film Council. The production involved a budget of around eight million US dollars, which Leigh said was "the lowest budget I've had for a long time".

Most of Another Year's key cast members had already worked with the director multiple times in the past. Leigh collaborated with the actors for five months to create their characters, world and do research. The director employed his usual technique where the actors improvise extensively during rehearsals, and the result of those improvisations becomes the basis for the final script used on the set. Principal photography took 12 weeks. To simulate the four seasons of a year, cinematographer Dick Pope used four different film stocks, and much attention was paid to details in the props so the passage of time would appear believable.

The film debuted at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in competition for the Palme d'Or and although it failed to receive any prizes, it was well received, scoring an 3.4/4 average at Screen International's annual Cannes Jury Grid, which polls international film critics from publications such as Sight & Sound, The Australian, Positif, L'Unità and Der Tagesspiegel.

Wendy Ide of The Times described the film as "Leigh at his confident best" and "a disarmingly humane work" and describes "Mike Leigh shows admirable restraint: there are no manufactured crescendos, just a melancholy refrain that builds to its raw realisation in an achingly sad final shot." Xan Brooks of The Guardian described Another Year as "a rare treat", and Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent described the film as "an acutely well-observed study of needy and unhappy people desperately trying to make sense of their lives." According to review aggregation website, Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 8.2 out of 10 from 100 reviews.

Watch Blue Valentine Full Movie Online Free

Download the movie Blue Valentine online. Blue Valentine (2010) is a Drama and Romance movie that set to be released wide on December 29, 2010. In Blue Valentine, the film depicts a married couple, Dean Pereira (Gosling) and Cindy Heller (Williams), shifting back and forth in time between their courtship and the dissolution of their marriage several years later.

Dean is a young high school dropout, working for a New York City moving company. Cindy is a pre-med student living with her unhappy parents and caring for her grandmother in Pennsylvania. They meet by chance and fall deeply in love in a matter of weeks. They rush into marriage after discovering Cindy is pregnant from a previous boyfriend, Bobby (Mike Vogel). Dean agrees to raise Cindy's daughter, Frankie, as his own. Before the wedding Bobby, unaware of Cindy's pregnancy, finds and assaults Dean at his job.

This narrative of their courtship is intercut with that of a weekend near the end of their marriage. By this point, they live in rural Pennsylvania and Dean works at painting houses while Cindy is a nurse. In the hope of resurrecting their troubled relationship, Dean brings Cindy to a motel, but they fight, and Cindy is called away early in the morning to work at the hospital. Dean shows up at the hospital drunk, leading to an intense argument and violent altercation with a doctor. Dean tries to console Cindy into giving their relationship another chance due to fear of raising Frankie in a broken home, Cindy argues that their home is already broken. Dean decides to give Cindy space and leaves, though Frankie runs after him asking him to stay. As Frankie is encouraged to return to Cindy, Dean walks off into the distance. Stars in Blue Valentine movie are Ryan Gosling as Dean, Michelle Williams as Cindy, Faith Wladyka as Frankie, John Doman as Jerry, Mike Vogel as Bobby, Marshall Johnson as Marshall, Jen Jones as Gramma, Maryann Plunkett as Glenda, James Benatti as Jamie, Barbara Troy as Jo, Carey Westbrook as Charley, Ben Shenkman as Dr. Feinberg, Eileen Rosen as Mimi, Enid Graham as Professor and Ashley Gurnari as Checker. Williams was 21 when she received the script and Gosling committed to the production two years later, but filming did not begin until 2009, when Williams was 27, due to Cianfrance's inability to find financing. The director was also unable to film the "young" and "older" scenes several years apart as he had hoped, again due to lack of money. The film was to be shot in California but production was moved to Brooklyn, New York and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Williams wanted to stay close to her Brooklyn home to take care of her daughter, Matilda, so the director chose Scranton due to its proximity to Brooklyn:
I took a compass and … literally put one point of the compass on her house, and I drew a circle, an hour diameter around her house, and it just touched Scranton, Pennsylvania. So the next day I drove to Scranton … and we said, 'We’re shooting here'.
—Derek Cianfrance,
Gosling and Williams improvised dialogue; the scene in which their characters wander through New York together was unscripted, for example, with the actors—who had both appeared in The United States of Leland (2003) but had not shared scenes—getting to know each other during its filming. Before filming the marriage dissolution between the main characters, Gosling and Williams prepared by renting a home, bringing their own clothing and belongings, buying groceries with a budget based on their characters' incomes, filming home movies and taking a family portrait at a local Sears with the actress who played their daughter, and staging out arguments. Cianfrance visited the actors and assisted them in building tension while remaining in character: "One night he told Gosling to go into Williams' bedroom and try to make love to her. Gosling, soundly rejected, ended up sleeping on the couch."

The film was filmed in Super 16mm and Red One. The former was used for the pre-marriage scenes and the latter was used for the post-marriage scenes.

While on the The Hollywood Reporter Director's Roundtable, Derek Cianfrance pointed out that he gave up his entire director's fee to help fund the film:
I didn't make a dime on Blue Valentine. Not a penny. I mean, it came down to we were exactly my fee short. They paid me and I just paid it back. So I still have to pay taxes on it, you know. So I actually had to pay to make the movie.
—Derek Cianfrance,
Gosling wrote and performed some songs by himself. The band Grizzly Bear composed the score of the film. A soundtrack for the film was released by Lakeshore Records.

One of the film's feature songs, "You and Me", which is presented as the couple's personal song, was originally recorded as a demo by a group called Penny & The Quarters for the obscure Prix Label of Columbus, Ohio in the early 1970s. It was re-released on a compilation album by the Numero Group in 2007 without the members of the group being identified.

The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

In Australia, the film was released on December 26, 2010 through Palace Films. In the United States, it was distributed by The Weinstein Company as a limited release on December 29, 2010.

On October 8, 2010 Blue Valentine was officially given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA for American cinemas. This was due to a scene depicting cunnilingus. However, The Weinstein Company appealed the decision and aimed for an R without any trims to the film, since the prior decision would significantly harm the film's potential box office take in the United States. The company's appeal was successful on December 8, 2010, and the film received the desired rating.

Blue Valentine has received critical acclaim. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reports that 89% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 142 reviews, with an average score of 7.8/10. The consensus reads "This emotionally gripping examination of a marriage on the rocks isn't always easy to watch, but Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling give performances of unusual depth and power."

In 2006, the script won the Chrysler Film Project, a competition that awards cash to an outstanding new feature film director overseen by Independent Feature Project.

Watch The Illusionist Full Movie Online Free

Watch The Illusionist (2010), rated PG, movie showing on December 25, 2010 in theaters wide. The Illusionist is an Animation, Drama and Comedy film. The Illusionist movie stars are Jean-Claude Donda, Eilidh Rankin, Duncan MacNeil, Raymond Mearns, James T. Muir, Tom Urie and Paul Bandey and directed by Sylvain Chomet. The Illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With emerging rock stars stealing his thunder in the late 1950s, he is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafés. Then, while performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl, who will change his life forever. Watching his performance for the excited villagers who are celebrating the arrival of electricity on their remote island, Alice is awestruck by his show and believes his tricks are real magic. Though they don‟t speak the same language, the two lonely strangers quickly bond through small kindnesses. Fascinated by The Illusionist, Alice stows away on his departing ship and follows him to Edinburgh. There, they quickly fall into a father - daughter relationship, with Alice keeping their home at a boarding house for vaudevillians, while he goes to work in a small local theatre. Enchanted by her enthusiasm for his act, The Illusionist rewards Alice with increasingly lavish gifts he has 'conjured' into existence. Desperate not to disappoint her, he cannot bring himself to reveal that magic does not exist and that he‟s driving himself to ruin working all night jobs to buy her gifts. As The Illusionist grows older, Alice grows up. She falls in love with a young man and is no longer so enchanted by The Illusionist‟s conjuring. She moves on with her life, and The Illusionist no longer has to pretend. Untangled from his own web of deceit, he resumes his life as a much wiser man. The film is distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. So download free The Illusionist (2010) movie online.

According to the 2006 reading of The Illusionist script at the London Film School introduced by Chomet, "The great French comic Jacques Tati wrote the script of The Illusionist and intended to make it as a live action film with his daughter”. Catalogued in the Centre National de la Cinématographie archives under the impersonal moniker "Film Tati Nº 4", the script was passed to Chomet by the caretakers of Tati’s oeuvre, Jerome Deschamps and Macha Makeieff after Les Triplettes de Belleville was premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Chomet has said that Tati's youngest daughter, Sophie Tatischeff, had suggested an animated film when Chomet was seeking permission to use a clip from Tati's 1949 film Jour de fête as she did not want an actor to play her father. Sophie Tatischeff died on 27 October 2001, almost two years before the 11 June 2003 French release of Les Triplettes de Belleville.

The film was made at Chomet's Edinburgh film studio, Django Films, by an international group of animators. It was estimated to cost around £10 million and was funded by Pathé Pictures. However, in a February 2010 press conference, Chomet said that it had ended up costing $17 million. The Herald says 180 creatives were involved, 80 of whom had previously worked on Les Triplettes de Belleville. In The Scotsman, Chomet cites 300 people and 80 animators. The film was primarily animated in Scottish Studios in Edinburgh (Django Films) and Dundee (, with further animation done in studios in Paris and London. Around 5% of the work (mainly inbetweening and clean-up), was completed in South Korea.

The Django Films studio was originally established with the intention to establish itself in the film-making scene with both animation and live action, however the company is being dismantled. Django was beset with production difficulties, first losing funding for its first animated feature, Barbacoa. It then failed to secure funding for a BBC project that had been labelled "The Scottish Simpsons". Chomet was then fired from the directorial duties of The Tale of Despereaux by Gary Ross. Django Films were very far from employing the 250 Artists that it would have been required for the project, an estimated figure reported by Scotland on Sunday in 2005.

This picture marked Chomet's first following the 2003 arthouse smash The Triplets of Belleville.

The first footage from the film was shown at the 2008 Cannes film festival. In January 2010, it was announced that the film would premiere at the Berlinale festival in February. The film opened the 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival on 16 June. Pathé Pictures is managed distribution for France and the UK, and distribution deals were secured for Lithuania (ACME Film), Japan (Klockworx), Italy (Cinema 11), Greece (Nutopia), the United States (Sony Pictures Classics), Benelux (Paradiso), Russia and the Middle East (Phars Film). The first official trailer for the film was Russian and was released on March 13, 2010. The film was released in France on 16 May 2010, in Lithuania on 5 November 2010.

The film opened in France in 84 cinemas. According to Box Office Mojo, the film released in France on the 16th June 2010 entered the box office chart at number eight, with a revenue of €485,030 ($600,099) in the first weekend. By the end of the month of June, The Illusionist was absent from the French box office chart, with Shrek Forever After (Dreamworks) entering the chart at number one, and generating a revenue of $11,470,044 within its opening week.

The Illusionist opened in the UK in 42 cinemas (August 2010). It entered the UK box office at number 15, with revenue of £161,900 one place behind Disney’s Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, the chart dominated by Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables which grossed £3,910,596 in revenue in its first weekend of release.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 90% based on reviews from 99 critics, and reports a rating average of 8 out of 10. Its critical consensus is that The Illusionist is an "engrossing love letter to fans of adult animation, The Illusionist offers a fine antidote to garish mainstream fare."

In Télérama, Cécile Mury gave the film a rating of four stars out of five. Mury compared it to the director's previous feature film: "This Illusionist is as tender and contemplative as the Triplets were farcical and uneasy. But we find the oblique look, the talent that is particular of Sylvain Chomet. ... This world of yesterday fleets between realism and poetry." Christophe Carrière of L'Express was not fully convinced by Chomet's directing, finding the story clever, but "blunted when Chomet lets himself be submerged by Tati's melancholy, delivering more of a homage to a master than a personal adaption. Nevertheless, it is otherwise a beautiful work, with impeccable graphics and provides some stunning sequences (based on carnivorous rabbit stew ...). One would have liked a little bit more, that's all."

Jonathan Meville of The Scotsman wrote: "Edinburgh's skyline has never looked so good, and if the city didn't exist it would be hard to believe somewhere so beautiful was real: if locals aren't inspired to take a walk up North Bridge or down Victoria Street after this, they never will be." Whilst also in The Scotsman Alistair Harkness commented that "Once you strip away the overwhelming wow factor of the film's design, the absence of strong characterisation ensures the end result is bleaker and less affecting than was probably intended".

Tati’s biographer, David Bellos reviewing The Illusionist in Senses of Cinema was highly critical of Chomet’s adaptation stating “the film is a disaster”. “The great disappointment for me and I think for all viewers is that what Chomet does with the material is… well, nothing. The story he tells is no more than the sketchily sentimental plotline of L’Illusionniste. It’s really very sad. All that artistry, all that effort, and all that money… for this".

Reviewing The Illusionist in The New Yorker, Richard Brody commented "Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) has directed an animated adaptation of Jacques Tati’s 1956 screenplay, with none of Tati’s visual wit or wild invention". "Chomet reduces Tati’s vast and bilious comic vision to cloying sentimentality. The result is a cliché-riddled nostalgia trip. In French, English, and Gaelic".

Roger Ebert in his review wrote, "However much it conceals the real-life events that inspired it, it lives and breathes on its own, and as an extension of the mysterious whimsy of Tati". calling it the "magically melancholy final act of Jacques Tati’s career" and gave it four stars out of four.

The film was nominated at the 2010 European Film Awards and 68th Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature Film. On February 25th 2011, The Illusionist won the first César Award for Best Animated Feature.

It was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in the 83rd Academy Awards.

Controversy has dogged The Illusionist. with it being reported that "Tati was inspired to write the story in an attempt to reconcile with his eldest daughter, Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel, whom he had abandoned when she was a baby. And although she's still alive today and may in fact be his only direct living relative, she is nowhere mentioned in the dedications, which has seriously annoyed some".

In January 2010, The Guardian published the article "Jacques Tati's lost film reveals family's pain" stating, "In 2000, the screenplay was handed over to Chomet by Tati's daughter, Sophie [Tatischeff], two years before her death. Now, however, the family of Tati's illegitimate and estranged eldest child, Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel, who lives in the north-east of England, are calling for the French director to give her credit as the true inspiration for the film. The script of L'illusionniste, they say, was Tati's response to the shame of having abandoned his first child [Schiel] and it remains the only public recognition of her existence. They accuse Chomet of attempting to airbrush out their painful family legacy again."

On the 26th May 2010 renowned film critic Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times published a lengthy letter from Jacques Tati’s middle grandson, Richard McDonald that pinpointed historical events in the private life of Jacques Tati that the family believe was his remorseful, melancholy inspiration to write, yet never make L’Illusionniste.

Chomet has a different opinion about the film's origins although acknowledging: "I never got to meet Sophie, or even speak to her about the script." Chomet said, "I think Tati wrote the script for Sophie Tatischeff. I think he felt guilty that he spent too long away from his daughter when he was working."

In a June 2010 interview for The National, Chomet gave his personal reasons for his attraction to the script: "I have two young children, a four-year-old and a two-year-old. But I also have a daughter who is 17 who I don’t live with because I separated from her mother. She was 12 when I started the project and you can feel things changing." This appears to mirror the regret of a broken paternal relationship that Tati had with his own daughter Helga Marie-Jeanne Schiel. Of the story, Chomet commented that he "fully understood why [Tati] had not brought [The Illusionist] to the screen. It was too close to him, and spoke of things he knew only too well, preferring to hide behind the figure of Monsieur Hulot".

Having corresponded with Tati’s grandson former Tati colleague and Chicago Reader film reviewer Jonathan Rosenbaum published an article entitled “Why I can’t write about the Illusionist” in which he wrote, “Even after acknowledging that Chomet does have a poetic flair for composing in long shot that’s somewhat Tatiesque, I remain skeptical about the sentimental watering-down of his art that Chomet is clearly involved with, which invariably gives short shrift to the more radical aspects of his vision”. With McDonald being quoted saying “My grandmother and all his stage acquaintances during the 1930’s/40’s always maintained that he(Tati) was a great colleague as a friend and artist; he unfortunately just made a massive mistake that because of the time and circumstances he was never able to correctly address. I am sure his remorse hung heavy within him and it is for this reason that I believe Chomet’s adaptation of l’Illusionniste does a great discredit to the artist that was Tati.”

Tees Maar Khan received mostly negative reviews from critics. Anupama Chopra of NDTV wrote, "Tees Maar Khan, adapted from After the Fox, by writers Shrish and Ashmit Kunder, is disappointingly limp and insistently low IQ. The film has little of the effervescence and flair of a typical Farah Khan film." Aseem Chhabra of, who rated the film 1.5/5, stated, "Even at two hours, the film feels like one long and tedious exercise in bad humour. Some people laughed during the screening I attended in New York City. However, most sat with glum faces, in a sense of disbelief ..... How could a talented(..?) person like Khan make such an unfunny film?" Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave a modest rating of 3/5 in his review and said, "Farah Khan's brand new outing Tees Maar Khan will make the most absurd, bizarre and wacky cinema of yore pale in comparison. Not just your cell phone, even your brain needs to be put on 'switched off' mode at the commencement of this film." Nikhat Kazmi of the Times of India awarded 2.5/5 stars while commenting, "Sadly, Tees Maar Khan begins as a spoof and remains a spoof, till the very end. All the characters end up as mere caricatures and completely fail to build up an emotional quotient in the film." Yahoo! Movies gave the film 1.5/5 stars. Komal Nahta of gave it a rating of 2/5 and stated, "Too much of farcical comedy; lack of emotions; over-the-top characters; unbelievable script ..... Tees Maar Khan is definitely a disappointment; but it will bring back the invested money and a bit more." Aniruddha Guha of Daily News and Analysis gave the film 2 stars and remarked, "Even Sheila can’t make Tees Maar Khan watchable ... Though the story is interesting (Neil Simon of After The Fox should ideally get the credit), the writing is so pedestrian and Farah Khan’s presentation so lacklustre that you wonder how the film was greenlighted at all." Gaurav Malani of The Economic Times gave 2 stars saying, "To sum up in Tees Maar Khan’s trademark style of dialogue delivery, Akshay Kumar se zara hatke comedy expect karna aur Akshaye Khanna se kuch bhi expect karna bekaar hain. Tees Maar Khan doesn’t even guarantee thirty good laughs in its three hour runtime." Kaveree Bamzai of India Today rated it 2½/5 saying, "It's an oddly half-hearted film from a woman [Farah Khan] who is never known to do anything in half measure." Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN rated the movie 2/5 suggesting, "If you’re outraged by such low-brow humor, 'Tees Maar Khan' is going to be a long, hard slog for you."

Tees Maar Khan took a 100% opening at most multiplexes across India. The film collected Indian Rupee ₹13.06 crore (US$2.9 million) on its first day of business, becoming the second biggest opening day grosser of all time across India for Hindi movies after Dabangg. On the second day of its release, the film netted Indian Rupee ₹13.5 crore (US$3 million), taking the two day total to Indian Rupee ₹26.5 crore (US$5.88 million) nett. Watch Somewhere (2010), rated R, movie showing on December 22, 2010 in theaters wide. Somewhere is a Drama and Comedy film. Somewhere movie stars are Stephen Dorff as Johnny Marco, Elle Fanning as Cleo, Chris Pontius as Sammy, Erin Wasson as Party Girl #1, Alexandra Williams as Party Girl #2, Nathalie Fay as Party Girl #3, Kristina Shannon as Bambi, Karissa Shannon as Cindy, John Prudhont as Chateau Patio Waiter, Ruby Corley as Patio Girl, Angela Lindvall as Blonde in Mercedes, Maryna Linchuk as Vampire Model, Meghan Collision as Vampire Model, Jessica Miller as Vampire Model and Lala Sloatman as Layla and directed & written by Sofia Coppola. Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a Hollywood actor, who, despite his recent rise to fame, does not feel much meaning in his life. He resides at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles from where he completes various publicity obligations for his new film: he is photographed with his co-star (Michelle Monaghan), gives interviews to the press, and attends an award ceremony in Italy. Despite drinking and socializing occasionally with Sammy (Chris Pontius), an old friend, Marco spends much time alone, driving his Ferrari motorcar, drinking beer, taking pills and fornicating with various women. Twice he has two pole-dancing twins (Kristina and Karissa Shannon) set up their equipment and perform in his room, the first time he falls asleep and the second routine is more calisthenic than erotic.

He receives an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Elle Fanning). Her stay changes his lifestyle little at first, including his indulging an overnight visitor, a blonde woman. Marco and his daughter spend time together in his hotel suite and he brings her with him on his daily routine and on a publicity trip to Italy, and through preparations for her departure to summer camp. As their time together grows, Marco's fatherly emotions emerge and force him to re-assess his otherwise 'successful' life. At the end, Marco checks out of the hotel promising not to return, and drives his Ferrari into the countryside. He gets out, leaving the keys in the ignition, and walks down the highway smiling. Coppola's first three films examine feminine self-definition and maturation, usually in privileged circumstance. Lost in Translation (2003) depicts an encounter and brief friendship between two lonely Americans in a five star hotel in Tokyo and Marie Antoinette (2006), a stylised biopic of the eponymous queen, treated of her loneliness. Somewhere examines similar themes of success and isolation, but from a male perspective. The film explores Marco's seclusion and depression despite his outward professional success and the resulting wealth and fame. He appears to suffer from anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure, but the film itself is reticent in suggesting the causes of this. "He believes he's nothing", summarised Roger Ebert, a critic, "and it appears he's correct". The film's opening shot, a Ferrari circling a race-track in and out of a stationary camera position, its whine and roar rising and falling, establishes the theme of ennui. The sequence's length also offers a visual cue from Coppola to relax, observe and with-hold expectations. Coppola herself said she wanted to hint at this with a simple camera set-up, "so you're alone with this guy and not aware that it's a movie. But I hope it's a welcome contrast to the style of most movies out there. Something that gives you a chance to take a breath".

The Chateau Marmont, a well-known retreat for Hollywood celebrities, is the film's setting and can be "either a paradise of easy wish-fulfilment or a purgatory of celebrity anomie" in the words of A.O. Scott, but Coppola subtly conveys the emptiness of Marco's situation without denying its appeal. Coppola has stayed at the hotel before and said "I've seen a few Johnny Marcos"; in contrast, writing the part of the daughter, she drew on childhood experiences with her director father, Francis Ford Coppola, such as attending film festivals, though she denied the film was autobiography. Coppola said that cultural depictions of fame are unbalanced, and at a time when so many strive for it she is trying to show a different side of it.

Coppola mentioned that the parental angle was inspired by the recent birth of her second child by Thomas Mars. As the film progresses the "tender and temporary" father-daughter relationship comes to the fore. Marco has partial custody of his daughter from a broken down marriage, Ebert speculates that she probably understands the reasons for the split better than he, and wonders why the child must suffer his hedonism and "detached attempts at fatherhood". In some ways Cleo - having grown up inside the Hollywood bubble - mothers her father, cooking for him and being more worldly aware, but she also watches him with the wide-eyed adoration of a child.

Coppola comes from a family of film-makers and actors, and she has said how childhood memories of living in hotels partially inspired her choice of setting. Somewhere presents a detailed portrait of life in that industry and charts its existential and emotional boundaries. While celebrity gossip websites inform us of the shallowness of much of "star life", Coppola's feature differs in its emotional depth. She wanted to depict Marco working, but not on a film set. Instead he is shown giving interviews, being photographed, attending an awards ceremony in Italy, and having special effects make-up applied. When Marco attends the special effects department his face is covered in latex, the camera then very slowly, hypnotically zooms in. Marco is obliged to use his "star" recognition to help promote his new film, when his publicist calls he becomes passive and mechanically takes the arranged chauffeured car and speaks to the press. In part, the humour derives from Marco's subdued response to these attentions, and Coppola's off-beat observation of people around him. At the Venice film festival, critics highlighted the repetition of characters in a cloistered existence in Mrs Coppola's films, to which she responded “I feel like everyone should tell what they know in the world that they know”.

Scenes from the film are said to be inspired somewhat by the director's own childhood experiences as the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, a noted American director. She recalls sampling all the gelato flavours on a Milanese hotel's room service menu, a trip to Italy or a helicopter ride and though Coppola said there was a "personal connection" to the film, she denied it was autobiography. Rather she based the character of Cleo on a friend's daughter whose parents work in Hollywood and used her own experiences to relate to the character and add a realistic touch. Federico Fellini's Toby Dammit (1968) has also been noted as an influence. Meanwhile, the parental focus of the film developed because Coppola had recently had her second child. Coppola said that she thought of Dorff to play Marco early while writing the film, because he had an aura of “the bad-boy actor,” but also “this really sweet, sincere side.”

Coppola wanted a minimalist look for the film, especially after the mixed reactions to her richly costumed and set Marie Antoinette. The overall effect was to be “sweet and genuine but without being sappy.” For the visual style she discussed Bruce Weber's Hollywood portraits and Helmut Newton's of models at the Chateau Marmont, and Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1980), a film by Chantal Akerman about the routine of a Belgian housewife, with Harris Savides, the cinematographer. He said, "“The main thing was to tell the story really simply and let it play out in long beats and have the audience discover the moment." Coppola used the lenses that her father had filmed Rumble Fish (1983) with in an effort to give the film a more period look, although it is set in the present.

Before filming began Dorff, Fanning and Lala Sloatman (who plays Marco's ex-wife) improvised meals and fights to understand the family's dynamic. Dorff also collected Fanning from school and they spent an afternoon together to bond. Dorff stayed in the Chateau Marmont during principal photography, making it easier to get to the set and understand the character. Coppola also showed Dorff Paper Moon (1973) during production.

Filming took place in Los Angeles and Italy in June and July 2009. Benicio del Toro, Erin Wasson and members of the band Rooney have cameos in the film. In a feature for the New York Times website, Coppola discussed making the scene when Marco visits a special effects studio. She said she initially was unsure of how to approach it, but Savides did a long, slow zoom in which captures his breathing and creates a sense of claustrophobia. Despite many takes, Dorff was a "good sport", she said. The sound of the phone ringing was added by Sarah Flack, the editor, and it hints that Marco has been forgotten.

Somewhere was first shown at the 67th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2010 and it was released in Italy on the same day. On September 11, at the festival's close the jury unanimously awarded Somewhere the Golden Lion, the festival's prize for the best overall film. Quentin Tarantino, president of the jury, said the film "grew and grew in our hearts, in our minds, in our affections" after the first screening. Focus Features distributed Somewhere in North America and most other territories. Pathé released the film in France on 5 January 2011, while Tohokushinsha distributed it in Japan. Medusa Film has rights in Italy. Somewhere was released on 10 December 2010 in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, and on 22 December in North America.

The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Sight and Sound magazine, published by the British Film Institute, described Somewhere as a film "going round in circles" and noted that many viewers would "write off Coppola's film as the whinging of the privileged", but also acknowledged "a delicate portrait of a still-maturing pre-teen daughter". During the 2010 National Board of Review Awards, Sofia Coppola was given the Special Filmmaking Achievement Award for writing, directing and producing Somewhere.

Rotten Tomatoes, a review compilation website, reports that 72% of critics have given the film a positive review with an average score of 6.5/10, based on a survey of 162 reviews. It summarises critical opinion as: "It covers familiar territory for Sofia Coppola, but Somewhere remains a hypnotic, seductively pensive meditation on the nature of celebrity, anchored by charming performances from Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning". Metacritic, by comparison, assigned the film an average score of 67/100, based on 40 reviews from mainstream critics.

Roger Ebert, writing in the Chicago Sun Times, awarded the film four stars out of four and praised the detail in the portrait of Marco, saying "Coppola is a fascinating director. She sees, and we see exactly what she sees." A.O. Scott in the New York Times called the film "exquisite, melancholy and formally audacious" and said "This is not a matter of imitation, but rather of mastery, of finding — by borrowing if necessary — a visual vocabulary suited to the story and its environment. If you pay close attention, “Somewhere” will show you everything." Peter Bradshaw disagreed in The Guardian, awarding the film two stars from five. He praised the cinematic technique but said that the film resembled Lost in Translation too closely, lacked emotional depth and that even on second viewing "the question of why we should really care or be interested remains tantalisingly unanswered" the final shot failed to solve any emotional problems and "really is one of the daftest things I have seen for a long time." On BBC Radio 5 Live, Mark Kermode also gave a negative review, calling it "unbelievably self-indulgent and boring."

Allociné, a French cinema website, calculated a mean score of 2.9 stars out of 5 from twenty-six press reviews. Le Monde, a leading French newspaper, positively reviewed the film, saying Somewhere was Coppola's most minimalist and daring film. Coppola's films, it said, deal with "the delicate irony of the delinquency of a universe of the happy few", which is both to her credit to her and a ghost which haunts her, a loyalty ensareing her. France 24 said the "virtuosity of Coppola is also in her keeping empathy for the characters without pouring out mushy sentiment."

In its debut weekend in the United States, the film opened in seven theatres with $119,086, averaging $17,012 per cinema. As of February 2011, it has grossed $1,785,645 in the United States and USD$13,936,909 worldwide. In the United Kingdom, Somewhere went on limited release to sixty two cinemas, it earned £126,000 in the first weekend, of 10 December 2010. Its average per screen, £2,026, was higher than Coppola's earlier small film openings, Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). However, it was a lesser total taking and judged a poor commercial performance for the film. In France, Somewhere earned 401 511 EUR in the three weeks to 25 January 2011.

Phoenix, a French indie band, contributed the score of the film. Coppola is the girlfriend of Thomas Mars, the band's singer, she liked the songs "Love Like a Sunset Part I" and "Love Like a Sunset Part II" and requested the band do similar music for the film.

In 2010, the film score for Somewhere was produced by Phoenix. Save the Strokes's song during the poolside scene, the score is diegetic, i.e. the music comes from within the fictional world: Cleo ice-skates to Gwen Stefani, the twins pole-dance to the Foo Fighters.
